This new How To Dress Well track is so damn smooth. Ocean Floor For Everything is taken from his forthcoming second album Total Loss, which is frustratingly far away with a September release scheduled. Whether his spectral take on 90’s R’nB will be as powerful second time round remains to be seen, but this a promising start.

Digging this album quite a lot actually; it is dream pop, granted, and they do sound an awful lot like the Cocteau Twins at times, but it’s just a really cerebral and easy-going listening experience.

Definitely a 2012 album I’d recommend

Lately it has become a bone of contention for me, with no one but myself, how little space on my ipod is occupied by happy music. When I find myself clutching for something upbeat to accompany a sunny day it feels lacking, though one option which always delivers the goods is Fang Island’s self-titled debut album (which I reviewed here). A sharp colourful explosion of cheesy riffs, palpitating drums and joyous yelping vocals, it is an overwhelmingly positive celebration of rock and all of its absurd showy excess. Thank heavens then that those lads are back with a new album which is called Major on July 24th. This is a happy song from it, it is called Asunder.

Tangles is Ricky Egan from Glasgow Scotland. This is my 2nd post in the last week about artists which I found on this wicked little tape label called Animal Image Search.
Tangles sculpts beautifully woozy, singer songwriter lullabies with soft guitar artistry reminiscent of Loren Connors. The songs on side A of this cassette are nothing short of stunning, listening to these beautiful compositions could cure any hangover and gently rock anyone’s sadness into a dull cradle of soft comfort.
In essence Poplars can best be described as rainy sunlight on melancholic silk, please for your sake do yourself a favor; light yourself a cigarette and listen to the entire 23 minutes because it really is a masterpiece. Every second is a joy, from the first twenty minutes of bewilderingly peaceful melody to the blurred jangle climax that closes it out.

Seriously, this cassette is a triumph. BUY it here for only 4 bucks and hear the other side. Also go ‘Like’ the Tangles facebook

Willis Earl Beal

I’m still working out exactly what I think about Acousmatic Sorcery. It has some raw moments of brilliance certainly but there are also a lot of moments which don’t connect, and as a result feel horribly under-produced and self consciously lo-fi. There is no doubting the guy is an engaging character though, with a pretty great voice. So this interview/performace video is well worth a look.

Playlisted: March/April

I just don’t have enough time to write about everything here. I wish I did but then I would have no time to eat or wash or watch Mad Men. So from now on (probably) I’m gonna put together a Spotify playlist of recent releases each month. It’s a good way for me to maybe point out stuff which is good but I might not necessarily have a lot to say about so I never post it. Examples? On this month’s playlist there’s a track from the Michael Kiwanuka album which is really nice, but is getting plenty of coverage so there’s not much that hasn’t already been said. Similarly The Shins new album and Julia Holter’s Ekstasis. Then there’s also stuff from the likes of Mmoths, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Soap&Skin, AU and more which I’ve been digging but just never got round to posting. Who knows, it might be worth listening to.

For the most part I tend to write about bands which I like, rather than bands which I think people need to hear. Trouble Books are probably one of the few exceptions to that though, a thoroughly underappreciated group. Hopefully last years well received collaboration album with Emeralds man Mark McGuire will have helped to bring them a wider audience. This is a track taken from their forthcoming album ‘Concatenating Fields’ which looks set to be more of the wonderfully understated wispy ambient pop which they have managed to make a sound of their own. The album is due out on Bark & Hiss at the end of April.
