One of the most perenially undderrated bands in Scotland sadly decided to give up the ghost earlier this year. Despite self-releasing four albums which attracted a raft of critical acclaim, the Falkirk group still failed to capture any widespread attention and decided it was time to call it a day. Thankfully their body of brilliant work can live on though, as they’ve chosen to put their whole back catalgoue up for free download, through their own Wiseblood Industries label.
With the rise of chillwave as a force de hype over the last year or two there has been a lot of thoroughly mediocre artists touted as brilliant, however it was generally agreed that of the whole bunch there were two who seemed considerably more talented than most. Those were Toro Y Moi and Washed Out, the former recently returned with his sophomore effort, which took a step away from the synth steeped nostalgia haze of chillwave by numbers and towards something a bit more sleek. As Washed Out now returns with his Sub Pop debut, the man behind the moniker, Ernest Greene, has chose a similar tact. As if the cover art doesn’t say it all Eyes Be Closed pulsates with a raw sensuality, and gesticulates around it’s throbbing rhythm with a smoothness of touch you wouldn’t expect from one of the leading proponents of a fundamentally lo-fi genre. The album is released on July 12th, could be a big one.
Here’s a new cut from the upcoming Chad Valley EP Equatorial Ultravox, nothing massively original but Fast Challenges further highlights Hugo Manuel’s talents for creating hypnotic beats and cascading synths which emit a lush warmth befitting of the impending summer time.
